![]() ![]() The mating receiver is the Wonderful Sony STR-777ES. Most home systems won't reproduce those levels of bass but this comes close. ![]() I used to have a car that had a huge sound Alpine system in it that had enough bass from the dedicated subs and amps to crack the windshield so I'm a little jaded. I must admit to being a little bit of a Bass enthusiast and this sub fills the bill nicely. But, once the volume matches the other speakers, it blends in seamlessly and has added a dimension to my music enjoyment in our home. The volume control must be accessed and turned down a notch to blend in with the other speakers and not sound boomy or overdriven. My only complaint is that the level that sounds good for home theater is not the same as when you are playing music. The tank scene in Saving Private Ryan makes you believe the tanks will come right in the room with you. The dimension it adds to movies like The Matrix, Independence Day, Saving Private Ryan and others is truly amazing. I guessed correctly as it does round out my system very nicely and for the price, I couldn't be happier. I purchased it having never heard it in the store. I purchased Cerwin Vega because I had some older Cerwin Vega D-9's that I am using for my front speakers and thought this would match with them nicely. I purchased this sub to finish out my home theater system. In the next 6 months or so i hope to purchase a 200 watt center channel, and two 400 watt towers and possibly upgrade my receiver to the Denon AVR-5803 receiver to better handle the massive amounts of power required by the other four units. It's probably just a loose screw but none the less it can get quite annoying. The only complaint I have is at high amplification the subs back panel rattles. It has really deep bass, I'd be willing to bet lower than the 42hz indicated on the crossover nob. It's range at regular listening levels is exemplary. Granted the subwoofer doesn't like frequencies above 90hz when the volume is turned to full but what can you expect from a sub in this price range. In terms of bang for buck the HT-S15A is definitely the best. So I looked at other promising brands such as JBL, Boston Acoustics, Velodyne, Bob Carver, and Cerwin. I was originally looking at Acoustic research ARS-500 sub but the price was a little out of my league and AR is nowhere to be found in Ottawa. I was looking for a subwoofer with tremendous power and one that was a good bang for the buck. This sub is quite the addition to my system which consists of 2 AR-4x's a Technics SA-AX540 receiver, and a Technics SL-PD5 CD player. ![]()
